Once Upon a Time in Africa: 50 Years of Explorations and Adventures

Author(s): Angelo Castiglioni

Photographic/Gift

Entered with strength in the Third Millenium and in the global communication routes, Africa travels, today, towards modernity, wiping out, day after day, every heritage of its own composite cultural and ethnic identity. For this reason the precious archaelogical and anthropolgical work made by the Castiglioni brothers is particularly important today. This volume reconstructs, through the almost fifty-year career of the two Italian explorers, the deep identity of the Black continent, from the most ancient to the surprising passing rituals. An important part of the volume is dedicated to the archaelogical expeditions in Africa, starting with the discovery in the Nubian Desert in Sudan of 'Berenice Panchrysos', the 'entirely gold' city of pharaohs quoted by Pliny the Elder in his "Naturalis Historia" whose traces were lost. A find that the French Academician, Jean Vercoutter has considered 'among the great discoveries of archaeology'.
